The Payatas dump site tragedy in the Philippines, happened on July 10, 2000. At 8:05am a massive 50ft wall of solid waste, slides down and buries hundreds of shanties, and an undetermined number of people. Bulldozers excavated the site while residents dug with their bare hands and whatever tools they could find to try to rescue the victims. This is the story of what happened that day, and about the people who live and work in the stench and filth, sorting out the trash. This tries to explain why these people make this their choice of their lively hood. It helps to explain why thousands of migrants from farming and rural communities flock to Manila to seek an income for their families. It explores why the farmers have a difficult time surviving and producing farm goods. Originally produced in 2002, but updated in 2010. Nominated for best documentary at the Int'l Festival of Cinema and Technology in Toronto, 2002. DVD includes a new music video by Steve Willoughby, Children of the Streets, about the children who work the dump site in Payatas.
